Frontage welcomes Dr. John C. Bernal as VP Global Animal Welfare & Veterinary Resources

Dr. John C. Bernal, DVM, joins Frontage Laboratories with over 45 years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine. John reports to Dr. Abdul Mutlib, CEO.

John began his career as a licensed veterinary technician in a nonhuman primate research hospital and supervised an experimental research and surgical unit. Attaining all his lab animal science certifications, John held critical paraprofessional positions supporting multispecies research programs. Upon graduating from Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine, John pursued careers in directing large nonhuman primate production colonies and contract research organizations (CROs).

John has held management positions in global and diverse biomedical research programs. He was responsible for overseeing lab animal medicine and technical operations in a nonhuman primate CRO. John also became a global executive director of primate supplies and quarantine services for Charles River Laboratories, working to accredit and develop the best animal care and welfare practices in Asia. John held the position of Associate Director for the Southwest National Primate Research Center and a member of faculty as Professor of the Host Pathogens Interaction Program.

As president of CORES Consulting, John has been consulting the biomedical research community for the past ten years. As a consultant, he has served as an Attending Veterinarian in Academia, small research programs, and CROs while guiding pharmaceutical and biotech companies to ensure animal health quality, research procedures, and welfare practices support desired research outcomes.

John is a subject matter expert in lab animal regulatory compliance and IACUC functions, animal welfare practices, technical operations, clinical operations, research program management, biocontainment, technical training, research facility design and operations, primate supply and quarantine, and veterinary and technical staff development. John’s passion is working with organizations to fulfill their research mission and maintain a reputable animal care and use program, globally.
